Type of action: <br /> <br />(x) Administrative <br /> <br />() Legislative <br /> <br />2. Brief description of action: <br />Public Law 87-590 authorized constructing Pueblo Dam and Reservoir, <br />a feature of the Fryingpan-Arkansas Project located 6 miles west of <br />the City of Pueblo, Pueblo County, Colorado, to provide storage and <br />regulation of water supplies for irrigation, municipal and industrial <br />use, flood control protection for Pueblo and Arkansas Valley towns; <br />recreation, fish and wildlife enhancement, sediment reduction; and <br />regulation and storage of Project water and AIokansas River flows. <br />Construction began in June 1970, and is scheduled for completion <br />in 19750 <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />3. Summary of environmental impacts and adverse environmental effects: <br />A. The dam and reservoir will provide municipal, industrial, and <br />irrigation water, flood protection, water recreation opportu- <br />nities, and stimulate related short and long term economic <br />activity to communities of the Arkansas River Valley. <br />B. A permanent pool containing initially 30,000 acre-feet and 1290 <br />surface acres will provide a new reservoir type aquatic ecosystem. <br />About 18,000 acres of land acquired for the dam and reservoir will <br />be used by the Federal Government for operation and management <br />purposes 0 <br />C. The reservoir conservation pool will regularly inundate 4,646 <br />acres of land, nine miles of natural river, and displace eight <br />farm families. A fluctuation of about 80 vertical feet will <br />occur annually. <br />D. Construction will cause temporary scarring, destruction and <br />alteration of the existing landscape, and cause short term air, <br />water and sound problems. <br /> <br />4. Alternatives considered: <br />A. No dam and reservoir <br />B. Enlarge Twin Lakes <br />C. Dam and reservoir at another site <br /> <br />5.
