The dam will
contain approximately 495,oao cubic yards of concrete and
10,000,000 cubic yards of compacted earthfill. The dam height
above streambed will be approximately 191 feet, and the length
will be about 2 miles.

The reservoir has a total initial capacity of about 357,OaO
acre-feet and a surface acreage of 5,675 at flood-pool level.
However, under initial conditions the reservoir will generally
operate at conservation-pool levels ranging from 1,286 to 4,646
surface acres. Of the total initial capacity, 234,000 acre-
feet will be for municipal and industrial and irrigation uses,
27,OOa acre-feet for exclusive flood control, 66,000 acre-feet
for joint use, and a minimum pool of 30,Oaa acre-feet will be
provided to assure a water supply for water-oriented recrea-
tional and fishing activities. Figure 3 shows the water sur-
face areas under initial conditions and the capacity alloca-
tions under initial, 50 year, and 100 year sediment conditions.

The shoreline at all pool level elevations will be very irre-
gular and provide a sharp contrast between rugged rock outcrops
and rolling range land,

There are two major construction contracts for Pueblo Dam and
Reservoir. The first contract for construction of the dam
began in July 1970 and was completed in December 1971. It
consisted of preparation of the dam foundation, excavation
for the spillway stilling basin and outlet channel, construc-
tion of a concrete plug in the river channel, and construction
of the Hamp-Bell ditch headworks. (See Figure 4 - Buttress
and Spillway Stilling Basin Excavation). Bessemer Ditch Out-
let Works was partially completed under the first contract
as well as initial reservoir area clearing.

The second contract is scheduled for award in June 1972 with
completion in 1975. It consists of constructing the dam and
appurtenances to completion. Final clearing will be completed
under a separate contract. .

Bessemer Ditch Company's diversion structure and approximately
4 miles of its open ditch will be inundated by Pueblo Reservoir,

5
