C. <br /> <br />Sir: <br /> <br />The San Luis Valley Drain Committee submits the i'ollow- <br /> <br />ing report designed to set i' orth in parti cular certain 1'i ndings oi' <br /> <br />the committee which may be briei'ly summarized as i'ollows: <br /> <br />The cost 01' drain excavation, bridges and other neces- <br /> <br />sary structures and 01' acquiring the rights 01' way occupied by <br /> <br />these works, is estil1l!1ted at $580,000. This sum does nct include <br /> <br />liquidation c1' damages which may be claimed by adjacent land owners. <br /> <br />The original allotment 1'or this project was !)900,000. <br /> <br />The project will accomplish the collection, conveyance <br /> <br />and delivery to the channel 01' the Rio Grande 01' certain waters <br /> <br />which at present are evaporated and otherwise consumed without serv- <br /> <br />ing any useful purpose. It is estirrated that 40,000 acre feet is the <br /> <br />average annual quantity of water that can be salvaged in this l1l!1nner <br /> <br />throughout a period of years of moderate runoff. <br /> <br />The ccmmi ttee has concluded that the cost for salvaging <br /> <br />this water will be well within its economic value in this territory. <br /> <br />The quality of the drain water will be such that its dis- <br /> <br />charge into the Rio Grande will not affect in significant degree the <br /> <br /> <br />
