~~~1~
C')
t....
~'l
~J
~'..
i
~:
~,
WATER SUPPLY FOR DRAIN
I,.,J
Large areas of 1 and, between the present irrigated area and
"",l
the old eastern boundary, are still open for reclamation ,nth irriga-
tion and drainage, the only limitation baing Nle available water
supply. The growing demand for,ater has led to the re-use of the
drainage return from the higher areas to the west,vard, unless limit-
ed in some ''my. As matters noyt stand, drain lNat-ers are reapplied.
,nth no return therefrom during the irrigation season. In ordinary
years, waters are so used only in the period from April to October,
but in years of subnormal rainfall and runoff, such irrigation is ex-
ten~ed throughout the winter. Little ~Jater has issued from any of
the drains into the sump area in the past six or seven years.
It appears certain that this re-use of drainage 17ater will
be extended and continued, and additional lands brought back into use
east of present ocrnlpied territory until the area occupied consumes
practically all the natural and return supply. During periods of
high runoff, more lands will be occupied; and during periods of low
runoff, the e~stern border of the territory 1vill not receive an ade-
quate supply. The conclusion reached so far as the Sump Dre.in is
concerned is, therefore, that no regular dependence can be placed on
its securing water in rmterio.l amolmt from the drc.inage of lands to
the west. As r~ exception to this statement, it appears th~t an ir-
rigated area lyi~ east and southwest of Alarr,osc. along the drain ,nIl
contribute water in sufficient amount to be noted.
To the north and west of the head of the proposed Sump Dro.in,
the irrigable l=ds are served largely from local streams - La Garito.
6
