IJ':)
0::
.-I

SAN MIGUEL PROJECT
September 1974

.~QC}\}}.O~.

Southwestern Colorado in Upper Colorado River Basin in Montrose and
San Miguel Counties of Colorado.

AUTHORIZATION
~-~--..._--.-._--

Construction, operation and maintenance of the San Miguel Project was
authorized by the Colorado River Basin Project Act of September 30,
1968 (Public Law 90-537). It is a participating project of the
Colorado River Storage Project enacted April 11, 1956 (Public Law
84-485).

~R..O.J.EC~.O_B}_E_C.TLV.E.S.

The San Miguel Project is a multiple-purpose water resource develop-
ment which would regulate flows of the San Miguel River for irri-
gation, municipal and industrial use, fish and wildlife conservation,
recreation and flood control.

STATUS OF PLANNING
~- - -.--. ~- . ---~- ~ ...-~-,- ~-

Planning studies are being conducted to meet the needs of the area and
to reduce the project's adverse impact on the salinity of the Colorado
River. Deletion of the potential Paradox and Dry Creek Basin irri-
gated areas from the feasibility plan and substitution of the poten-
tial West Lilylands area would dramatically reduce the project's
salinity impact. Studies are being made to determine if high ele-
vation runoff occurring south of the project area can be developed for
project use. In addition, sprinkler irrigation is being studied for
full service lands which would reduce irrigation diversion require-
ments and return flow.

1
