~
0)
..-l

The expansion of irrigated agriculture associated with the San
Miguel Project is a great asset to the State of Colorado and the
nation. Anticipated increase in the production of badly needed feed
grains on these new irrigated lands will certainly help with the
world-wide food problems and balance of payment problems. It is
absolutely essential that we do everything we can to promote agri-
culture's place in the state, the nation and the world. Lest we
forget, agriculture is still the numbar one income producing enter-
prise in Colorado and the nation. The State of Colorado must closely
scrutinize plans for water development sO as to maintain a balance
between energy and agriculture. It would be folly "to put ell our
eggs in one basket."

To date there have been no environmental problems associated
with the San Miguel Project. Eleven mile Norwood Tunnel is a
definite environmental asset because it does not impede wildlife
migration, nor cause unsightly excavation. rhe elimination of the
salinity problem is also a tremendous anvironmental plus. rhe San
Miguel Board also plans to have a public involvement program in
the next two yaar's plan formulation process which would provide
a forum for working out environmental objections, should any arise.

In summary, the San Miguel Project is a project that has
strong and enthusiastic local support. It is also an environ-
mentally sound project that will prcduce both badly needed energy
and agricultural Pl'Orllll;t" to "e1'"'' 1 no;e1. st.ate, national and
international needs.

i11
