, , ."~' t,~:' ,fl,
..)VVh,

.

The estimated timing and rate of develo:pment of the shale
industry as shown in the Cameron and Jones report was based on nonnal
economic and po11 tical conditions without the stimulation of a
National emergency. Should a National emergency occur, the rate of
oil shale develo:pment would undoubtedly be accelerated.

No quanti tati ve estimates of oil shale develo:pment beyond
1975 were made in the Cameron and Jones report. The report indicated,
however, that there will be an ever-increasing demand for oil and
that it is reasonable to assume that shale oil production w:l11
continue to increase beyond 1975. It was estimated that oil shale
reserves are adequate to maintain shale oil production at a rate of
nearly 6,000,000 barrels per day for minimum period of IlO years.

Water requirements for oil shale develo:pment

.

Li tt1e water would be actually consumed in oil shale
mining and retorting operations but substantial amounts of water
would be necessary for refining, service industries, and residential
areas. Water requirements would be amall during the initial develop-
ment period but would increase rapidly with expansion of the industry
and associated community growth.

In the Cameron and Jones report, water requi:rements were
estimated for successive five-year periods beginning with 1960 and
ending in 1975. The estimates shown in the report are summarized in
the following tabulation by type of use.

.

31
