.

~)

.'

It should also be remembered that the Glen Canyon generators, If oper-

ated as intended with the lake permItted to fill when It can, has the capability

of supplying electricity to a cIty of 500,000 people IncludIng its industries,

If the Glen Canyon powerplant were not on the line, about 100 customers, many

of whom are cities. towns, and RLAs, would have to seek other sources of

power. This power would probably be replaced by some type of fuel-consuming,

thermal-electric generation not readIly at hand today,

Power generated at Glen Canyon has successfully prevented enforced

cut-backs In powcr use in adjacent marketing areas on sevcral occasions--a

real reserve generating capacIty value!

AgaIn. Dr. Guadagno may be referring only to energy production with

Lake Powell restricted to elevation 3600 feet as compared with production with

a limitation at 3700 feet. If so, it seems obvIous that reducing the power head

by an amount that would cause an average loss of 159 megawatts of capacity

for the period until year 2059 would reduce the energy potential at Glen Canyon

generating facilities' and, consequently, reduce the national power reserve,

Any redudion in capacity ami elimination of its output constitutes a reduction

in the natIonal power producing system,

The doctor Is not correct when he says that the potential power production

capability of Glen Canyon Dam has been overestimated, At the time the machinery

was designed for the powerplant It was estImated that the generating capacity

would be 90r) megawatts. Since then the generators have been certified to produce

950 megawatts. The basis for the contention that "the power production capability

of Glen Canyon Dam has been overestImated," is unknown, but anyone can check

the records of operation and ascertain Its power productIon hIstory.

16
