In the north- <br />west corner Pierre shale is found, whereas south of Manzanola, Vroman, <br />and Rocky Ford there are scattered areas of the Ogallala forrrntion. The <br />remainder of the area is underlain by members of the Niobrara group. <br /> <br />Soils of the area vary from fine ~andy loam to clay. The texture <br />in azv given locality is largely dependent upon the underlying parent <br />formation. The predominate soil texture is clay lo~which is found <br />south of and between Rocky Ford and La Junta. North of Rocky Ford, a <br />large body of olay soil is found. About half of the land with clay <br />loam or olo.y soil i's Class 2 lc.nd.
