.. .i

.

.

The United States has been a net exporter of vanadium since the

mid-1950's, although the Nation's self-sufficiency has been weakening in

the face of strong domestic demand for this important ferrous metal.

Noteworthy is the fact that about 60 percent of the world's vanadi"Jrr

reserves are concentrated in the U.S.S.R., with lesser reserves located

in the Republic of South" Africa and Australia.

Forecasts of national demand in year 2000 for minerals currently

produced in the Dolores River basin are listed in table 4. Considering

median levels of expected demand, most of the listed commodities are

expected to triple in use by 2000. Exceptional demand growth rates are

foreseen for uranium and vanadium--increases of 23- and 5-fold; respectively.

The basin has been an important source of both of these metals.

TABLE 4. - Forecasts of National demand in year 2000 for ~inerals
currently produced in the Dolores River basin

COllllllodity

Petroleum. . . . . . . . .
Natural gas.......
Coal............. ..
Uranium..
