Total value of all fruit pro-
duction in Mesa County during 1974 was estimated at $7,779,000 of which
about 94 percent is produced in the Grand Valley. However, it must be
noted that weather can reduce production by more than 80 percent in a
given year.

Levels of management in the Grand Valley are quite divergent and in
general, reflect the degree of profitabil ity of the farm operation and
the efficiency of irrigation in the farming operation. Management
appears to be the most significant factor in attaining high on-farm
irrigation efficiency. Management in this sense includes efficient water
management and efficient management of cultural practices.

Other factors which affect the level of management are soil type and the
extent that new technology is used.

24
