(--~
C .'

r.WCB
NO'l 2 5 199\

,CJ
ILl")

':

Central Arizona Project Status
Quarterly Update

(.

November 1991

The fIrSt 318 miles of the 336-miIe-Iong Central Arizona Project (CAP) aqueduct,
from the Colorado River to San Xavier Pumping Plant (see attached map), are fully
operational. Water is being delivered to users from western Maricopa County to the
Central Arizona Irrigation and Drainage District's South Main turnout in southern
Pinal County about a mile north of Red Rock Pumping Plant.

All remaining features on the Tucson Aqueduct are under construction or complete,
but not yet operational. These features are scheduled to be fully complete and
operational by September 1992. Ceremonies commemorating the initial delivery of
CAP water to Tucson were held on October 4, 1991. Attendees included various
state, local, and Reclamation dignitaries. The City of Tucson anticipates it will begin
initial commercial delivery of treated water from its water treatment plant in the
summer of 1992. Partial use (testing) of the treatment plant will begin in early 1992.

Work also is continuing on CAP's Plan 6 features-New Waddell Dam, Stewart
Mountain Dam, and Roosevelt Dam.

Following is the status of construction and water operations for the CAP.

Construction

Siphons

Damaged areas have been discovered on six siphons constructed with prestressed
concrete pipe. Repairs were completed in early 1991 at damaged areas that had
previously been identified.

To date, no inspection methods have been identified which can reliably locate all
damaged areas, Therefore, the potential for rupture of the siphons still exists.

Based on damaged areas identified to date, the decision has been made to replace
three of the siphons, line a portion of one of the siphons, and to investigate and repair
as necessary the remaining siphons.

The design for the replacement of the first of the three siphons has been initiated.

Tucson Aqueduct pumping plants

. Twin Peaks and Sandarlo: Reclamation is delaying final acceptance of
pumps until the manufacturer completes repairs and retests the pump units.
Three units have been returned from the factory. Reinstallation is tentatively
scheduled to begin in November 1991.
