Annual Report For 1973

Supel'intendent's Repol't
To
The Amity Mutual Irrigation Company
TO THE DIRECTORS AND STOCKHOLDERS:

Gentlemen:

The (ollowing statements covering the operation and mainll::'nance of
The Amity Mutual Irrigation Company, its canal~ and reservoir system,
are submitted Cor your consideration.

AMITY CANAL

A severe winter with heavy snows Collowed by rains in April and early
May produced an abundance of soil moisture. Consequently, canals in
Colorado postponed the call for John Martin Reservoir water until May 7.
Available storage on that date was about 52,000 acre feel, as compared with
24,679 acre feel on April 1. Kansas ditches did nol call for water until Ma.v
16. These call dates would seem to refute the criticism that Colorado and
Kansas water users call for John Martin water whether it is needed or not.
As a result of the late calls and the extra storage accumulated, John Martin
was not emptied until June 25. River now held up well and the Amity was
able to divert its first priority or better until August 15. After this date
river now was generally low and erratic. Supplemental water from the
Great Plains Reservoirs was again a very important factor in creating a
good water year for Amity Stockholders.

Sand and silt has accumulated over many years in the canal directly
below the rating flume. This accumulation finally caused the Amity Flume
to run in a submerged condition through most of the 1973 season. This
meant that one could not read the now through the flume directly but that
a correction factor had to be applied to compute the flow. This is unsatis-
factory in that computations are time-consuming and not always completely
ac~urate. Shortly after the irrigation season ended a large number of trees
were removed and the 22-B dragline began work at tile flume proceeding
cbwn the canal about 3 miles. This will correct the situation and the flume
will measure directly and accurately once again.

The Board of Directors have voted to replace the three antiquated flash-
board type checks in Buffalo Division with more modern steel flap checks. The
old checks were very unwieldy to operate. Only the greatest
amount of good luck has prevented a serious injury-or drowning in their
cperation over the years. At this writing in mid-January, the 3 steel flap

Page 16
