and depth, and bed materials were collected prior to the intens ive sampl ing to
aid in the interpretation of ' the modeling analysis.

A model by Bauer and Jenning$ (1975) will be applied to the resultant da-
ta from the Intensive data-collection activity. in addition, modeling appli-
cations may be attempted utilizing a modified PIONEER-l model developed for
the,U.S. Environmental Protection Agency by Battelle Northwest laboratories
(1973), which has been adopted by the Colorado Department of Health for appl i-
cation in the State. It is further envisioned that comparative modeling runs
using the above-mentioned models will Indicate some of the uncertainties in
the modeling structure and parameter estimation, as well as some of the prob-
lems associated with data collection.

PHASE-I REPORTS

A report will be prepared. which will describe (1) the environmental set-
ting in the Yampa River basin, and (2) various alternative proposals for
energy-resource development in the basin. The report will document the first
project phase by summarizing the environmental setting of the basin and pro-
viding information on energy extraction, energy utilization, and the antici-.
pated secondary impacts in terms of population growth, employment shifts, and
basin economy. A general description of the Phase II assessment approach will
be included. The intended aud.ience of the report includes those regional and
basin planners and managers working in energy-developed areas who are concern-
ed with water-use and environmental impacts.

Two special-topic reports are envisioned for describing in detail the
techn i ca 1 aspects of the water-qual i tyi nterpretat ions i nc I uded in work tasks
1-0 and I-E. These reports will be completed after the summary report, but
study approaches and extracted preliminary results of these two Phase-I inves-
tigations will be included in the summary report.

16
