' '", ' ", '",
The election wasn't one of those paltry affalrs in
which 10 or II percent of registered voters show up. In
this election, a little more than 41 percent of the
county's 32,703 registered voters cast ballots. '
Themargln of approval, combined with the ex~
traordinarily high voter turnout, should send a
message to t,lle project's opponents.
i '. It wasilome of these same opponents, claiming gov-
ernment offiCials believed them "too dumb" to vote on
the compleX: issue, that demanded the County Com-
lIIlssion giye residents th~ opportunity to speak on th~
matter., ;C\i.{~~':"~"~.~.__'..I) 1; '.. .. .,,:"",,"-' C.'-
I 'Now that the election is over, we hope the foes
accept the results gracefully and resist the temptation
to try to torpedo or delay the project by other means.
The opponents. as well as the advocates, of the
project performed a marvelous service by continuing to
hammer their arguments on the public. Though some residents said they believed the argu-
ments continued ad nauseam, the fact is that had the
,;. topiC not generated so much heated public discussion,
'the voter turnout would have far smaller than it was.
Now it is time for voices to be lowered and hands to
be shaken, '
In our constitutional republic, there is no higher
authority than the voter.
