<br /> <br />2443 House Office Building, Washington, D, C. 20515 <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />202-225-4761 <br /> <br />..e;,.,.. <br /> <br />October 19, 1978 <br />Contact: Floyd Ciruli <br /> <br />FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE <br /> <br />EVANS LAUDS SOUTHERN COLORADO'S SUPPORT <br />FOR THE FRYINGPAN-ARKANSAS PROJECT <br /> <br />U.S. Representative Frank Evans stated today that the <br /> <br />passage of the Hunter Creek diversion bill was only possible <br /> <br />because of the outpouring of support from Southern Colorado <br /> <br />cities, newspapers, and irrigation companies. <br /> <br />"The flood of telegrams and strong press coverage made <br /> <br />the difference in protecting the Fryingpan-Arkansas Project." <br /> <br />The legislation was made necessary by an Interior <br /> <br />Department ruling issued in June, that asserted the Bureau of <br /> <br />Reclamation does not have sufficient legal basis to take more <br /> <br />than 3,000 acre-feet of water from the combined flow of Hunter <br /> <br />Creek and the tributaries of the Roaring Fork. Colorado water <br /> <br />authorities believe 16,000 acre-feet were authorized. <br /> <br />Evans stated, "It's a shame we had to go through this <br /> <br />entire fight. The Interior Department opinion was wrong on the <br /> <br />facts and its legal conclusions. Lawyers for the Southeastern <br /> <br />Colorado Water Conservancy District prepared overwhelming <br /> <br />arguments against the opinion." <br /> <br />-more- <br />
