<br />000611 <br /> <br />POWER AND ENERGY <br /> <br />Hydroelectric Power Production <br />The national demands for more power may require assessment of new <br />operating criteria and the possibility of installing additional capacity at <br />dams with hydropower throughout this subbasin. <br />Mining <br />Energy-related water demands are increasing rapidly in this subbasin. <br />Along the Tongue and Powder Rivers in Wyoming additional storage areas are <br /> <br />needed to meet coal and uranium industry demands. <br /> <br />WATER-ASSOCIATED OUTDOOR RECREATION <br /> <br />Water Access <br /> <br />Additional public access to streams and hunting grounds is needed <br /> <br />throughout the subbasin to meet recreational demands; notably on the Tongue, <br /> <br />Bighorn, and Yellowstone Rivers. In the Miles City area' there is a need for <br />additional flat water recreation <br /> <br />WATER QUALITY <br /> <br />Nonpoint Source Pollution, <br /> <br />Irrigation return flows have contributed to increasing stream salinity in <br />the Yellowstone River, near Billings, Montana; the Shoshone River between <br /> <br />Lovell and Kane, Wyoming; and generally along the Wind and Bighorn Rivers, in <br /> <br />Wyoming. <br />Silt and salinity problems affect seasonal recreation use of streams in <br />the southern portion of the Powder River Basin. <br /> <br />H-9 <br />
