This saline shale underlies large portions of the <br /> <br />Upper Colorado' River Basin in western Colorado and eastern Utah. <br /> <br />This study addresses the geomorphic controls of salt release from <br /> <br />the Mancos Shale that is exposed at the base of the Book Cliffs in <br /> <br />Grand Valley, Colorado (Fig. 1.1). <br /> <br />1.2 Objectives <br /> <br />The objectives of this investigation were to: <br /> <br />1. Describe the geomorphology of the 'area. <br /> <br />2. Describe soluble mineral content (SMC) relationships of <br /> <br />surficial materials in erosionally unstable landforms. <br /> <br />3. Relate geomorphic stability to processes of salt release from <br /> <br />the area. <br /> <br />4. Recommend land use and/or salt control measures that might <br /> <br />be employed for the purpose of reducing the salt load entering the <br /> <br />Colorado River. <br /> <br />" <br />
