FINDINGS TO DATE:

History of Streamflow, Water Use, and Dissolved Solids
in the Upper Colorado River Basin

An ongoing study by the U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with the
U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, is investigating the history of water
development in the Upper Colorado River Basin and evaluating the effects
of the~e developments on streamflow quantity and quality.' Streamflow and
dissolved-solid~ records have been examined to determine source areas of
dissolved constituents and to determine systematic changes that might be
correlated with development in the basin.

Salini~y (dissolved-solids) loads are low in the headwaters regions, but
increase downstream as salts make their way into the river system.
Sources of dissolved-solids include runoff, groundwater input from saline
rock formations, return flows from irrigation, and municipal and
industrial sources. Concentration of dissolved solids is typically
higher ,in the baseflow period, when groundwater is the main contributor,
and lower in the spring runoff period, when relatively pure snowmelt
water dominates. At stations downstream from large irrigated areas,

,

._ jf"L,;;;';'(

"'''~_''7_"

!'.
:}

k", :Ju <

..".J
~;
