l~G;)

,
, "

CONSTRUCTION UTILITIES

137

remove unused lines consisted, under active construction condi-
tions, of a superintendent, 6 to 7 substation operators, 2 to 3 elec-
tricians, 5 linemen, and part time of five patrol crews with truck
drivers, helpers, and clerks, making an average force of 24 men.
The cost of construction, cost of operation and maintenance in-
cluding power purchased, credits from power sales, and net cost
to June 30, 1938 are given in Table 11. The net cost to .June 30,
1938 is the actual cost without depreciation and interest.
CONSTRUCTION TELEPHONE SYSTEM
Preliminary studies covering various plans for serving the com-
munication requirements along the aqueduct indicated the desir-
ability of utilizing the telephone initially during the period of con-
struction and later for the operation of the completed project in
preference to any other of the standard methods of communication.
Because of the desert and rural types of territory traversed by
the aqueduct there were no public exchange telephone systems in
the area suitable for serving the work. It was found that a sub-
stantial saving could be made if telephone service were rendered
over facilities installed and maintained by the District as com-
pared with costs for equivalent services offel'ed by the telephone
companies over facilities extended into the area by them.

TABLE 11

CONSTRUCfION POWER SYSTEM

CoSI~ 10 June 30, ]938

CONSTTlUCTIO:-; OPERATION POWER PU\HTl
COST AND MAINTE- PURCHASED, SALES
N.....NCE COST' KW-HR

CALENDAR
YEAR

1933 ........$1.734.014.10
1934 .. 85.330.17

1935 .

121,070.32

1936

50.980.22
19,609.37'
23,794.67
574.7f

1937 un

To June 30.
1938 . 7.333.06
4,3/1.80'
T ola Is. .$2.022,522.54
24,495.88l

ACCUMULATED
NET COST

$ m .200.35
394,063.98
17,610.721
571,438.19
227.761
592.517.84
2.J29.69~
583.974.16
3,5/0.iSJ

10.209.780 S 90,206.00
50,162.630 512,152.7.J.
81.010.560 7?J,259./V
82,521.752 772,/.f.2.2()
77.730.065 709.381.41

51.765.008.45
1.149.860.58
1.6/0.882.23
1.520,49897
1,414.800.93

256.496.96
5,941.951
2,519,691.48
5.800.57'

33.636,480 .121..98.96

1,346.878.24

335.271,267 J,176,6.J(}..7

1.346.878.24

'Includes cost of lJurchased power.
2Net salvage of lines and equipment removed.
ICost of operation and mainlenunce equipment less amount of depreci:Jtion applied
during the year.
Credit balances are printed in italics.
