The <br />record of construction is continued in this chapter, and the opera- <br />tional features are summarized. Water is now being regularly <br />released froll1 Lake Mathews, softened and filtered at the La Verne <br />plant and at the close of the fiscal year was being distributed <br />through the feeder lines to Pasadena, Los Angeles (Ascot reser- <br />voir only), Compton, Burbank, . Beverly Hills. and Santa Monica, <br />the last named city drawing its entire supply from the Colorado <br />Ri vel' aqued uct. <br /> <br />Opcmtion Feat"res <br />A map of the system and diagrammatic profiles indicating the <br />operational characteristics of the feeders are shown in figures 3 <br />and 4. For controlling the release of water from Lake Mathews, <br />its transmission through the feeders and its delivery to the member <br />cities there have been provided appropriate types of valve and <br />metering equipment. The operating structures include outlet <br />towers at the reservoirs, a manifold and valve st,ructure at the <br />headworks, and a number of division structures, sectionalizing <br />valves, pressure regulating and relief valves, check valves and flow <br />meters at suitable points along the feeders and laterals. <br />Water enters the Lake Mathews outlet tower at selected levels <br />through ports controlled by 30-inch hydraulically-operated gate <br />valves, and flows out through the base of the tower into the 14-foot <br />diameter outlet tunnel which conveys it 2,348 feet to the headworks <br />manifold. The water pressure in the manifold varies according to <br />the stage of the water in Lake Mathews, which rises to elevation <br />1357 when the reservoir is full. Before beginning its long journey <br />through the upper feeder the water must be released from the <br />manifold at measured rates into the open paoloI' forebay of the <br />headworks, from which entry to the upper feeder is provided <br />[35 ] <br />
