<br /> <br />, "'6') <br />, '. <br />_0 I.:' <br /> <br />6 <br /> <br />METROPOLITAN WATER DISTRICT <br /> <br />First development stage <br />In this initial construction phase of the project, certain features <br />have been built to full capacity, certain others to half capacity, and <br />the remainder to less than half capacity. <br />The term "full capacity" customarily refers to the District's filing <br />on 1,500 cubic feet per second of'Colorado River water. To accom- <br />piish deiivery of this quantity, in the ultimate development of the <br />project, the designed full capacity of main aqueduct features is <br />1,605 cubic feet per second, in order to allow for operating outages <br />aggregating 7 per cent of the iime. The pumping plants, each with <br />nine units of 200 cubic feet per second, will have one spare in the <br />ultimate development. <br />Features which have been initially constructed to full size are <br />the pumping piant substructures and foundations, the main aque- <br />duct tunneis, the cut-and-cover conduits, the canals, and 23 per cent <br />of the total length of inverted siphons. Built to half size are the <br />superstructures of the pumping plants and 77 pel' cent of the total <br />length of inverted siphons on the main aqueduct. On the distri- <br />bution system, the Lake Mathews reservoir has been constructed to <br />approximately half its ultimate storage capacity, and the upper <br />feeder is designcd to transport as far as San Dimas a flow of 750 <br />cubic feet per second, or haif the main aqueduct capacity. Fea- <br />tures having less than half the ultimate capacity are the pump <br />installations, with three pumps presently installed in each plant to <br />deliver 600 cubic feet per second to Lake Mathews; the distribution <br />sysiem west of San Dimas; and the water softening and filtration <br />plant, initially built to soften 155 cubic feet per second. <br /> <br />Construction and operation <br />During the past year the Santa Monica feeder extending through <br />Giendale, Burbank, Hollywood, Beverly Hills, and West Los An- <br />geles, work on which was initiated prior to July I, 1940, has been <br />completed. The Orange County feeder is virtually completed from <br />the upper feeder at La Verne to Fullerton, Anaheim, and Santa <br />Ana. The water softening and filtration plant was finished and is <br />being operated through a try-out period, and the Orange County <br />reservoir is nearing completion. Laieral pipe lines were extended <br />to selected points on the water systems of Burbank, Compton, <br />Long Beach, and Torrance. <br />Delivery of softened and filiered Colorado River water was first <br />made to Pasadena on June 17, to Santa Monica on June 19, Los <br />
