It also defers, without interest, until after the fifty- <br />year repayment period, the. repayment of advances for flood control, <br />in the amount of $25,000,000. Negotiation of new contracts under <br />the adjustment act is now under way. <br />When executed, such contracts will be retroactive 'and the rates <br />therein prescribed will be operative from 1937, that being prior to <br />the date when the District first became obligated to pay for electrical <br />energy under its original contract. A reduction of energy rates <br />under the. adjustment act will result in a substantial reduction of <br />operating expenses of the District. <br />Congressional legislation was obtained, by which the Metropolitan <br />Water District of Southern California will be permitted to lease <br />public sodium-producing lands in the same manner, and to the same <br />extent, as other corporations. This was deemed advisable ill order <br />to piace the District in a favorable position ill meeting its sodium <br />chloride requirements. <br />Much of the area inundated or affected by the creation of Lake <br />Havasu, back of Parker dam, is held in trust for the Chemehuevi <br />and Mojave tribes of Indians. To transfer these lands to the United <br />States for reservoir use, congressional authority was required. An <br />act was passed by Congress io accomplish that purpose. <br /> <br />~ <br />
