.

I,
1::'--

.

---

.0" ,,",.!""; ,-\
t'- i 1"

~Water-resources1

For the study period 1930-1941, the Busk-Ivanhoe Tunnel diverted
an average of 5,000 acre-feet per year from an area of approximately
5.0 square miles at the headvnlters of Fryingpan River. This would in-
dicate a unit runoff of 1,000 acre-feet per square mile per year. Due
to insufficient storage facilities in the ~rkansas River Busin during
periods of high runoff, the diversion WaS probably restricted. The unit
runoff is therefore undoubtedly more than the 1,000 acre-feet per squ~
mile shown. 3y inspection of past diversions rrnd the indic~ted runoff
of Fryingp"n River at Norrie, it is estimated that the c,nnual unit run-
off of the area oQ~nna9fby the Busk-Ivanhoe Tunnel was 1,150 acre-fe~
per squ,re mile.

By extrapobting the altitude runoff graphs (exhibit 4) it is
estimated that 933 acre-feet of runoff per square mile nre produced each
year above the diversion structures on the Fryingpan River. The aver-
age, flnnual runoff froL1 the ,,-rea above the diversion for the study"period
1930-1941 would then be 933 tirr,es 57.3, or ap?roximc,te~y 53,500 a9.ro",.
r~<3t.

~i

Fron the altitude runoff graph it is estimated that 950 acre~feet
of runoff per squClre "'ile arc procuced each year c,bo\'-e the diversion
structures on the North Fork of the Fryingpan River. The average nn-
nual runoff from tho area above the diversion for the study period
1930-41 would then be 950 times 14.9 which equals approxim~tely 14,100
nero-feet.

The runoff rate from the 5.0 square miles of Hunter Creek drain-
age is estinr.ted to bc the swne as the runoff rate for F'ryingp~ River
above the diversion sturctures. The average annual runoff for the 5.0
squ~re miles of Hunter Creek drainage area would then be 933 times 5.0
or approximatoly 4,600 flcre-feet.

Runoff rates se determined arc average annual runoff for the criti-
cal period 1930-1941. The runoff for any given month or year is based
on the variation of runoff at the st'ltion from which the original esti-
note of runoff wus made. Since records of both the Fryingpan River at
Norrie and the North Fork of the Fryingpan River near Norrio for tho
period 1930-1941 were obtained by correl~tion with rocords of the Roar-
ing Fork River at Glenwood Springs, the monthly vari,~ion is actually
thnt of the Roaring Fork River at GlemlOod Springs. .

The total runoff origin~ting in the w~tershed commanded by the
Fryingprrn River Diversion is 72,200 acre-feet per year for tho study
period 1930-1941, or 68.1 percont of the combined flows of the Fry-
ingpQn River nnd the North Fork of the F'ryingpnn River ~t or near
Norrie. fha runoff oribinnting "bove thu Fryingpan Diversion, as

8
