Conversion of Chapa.l Brush

.

Conversion of dense chaparral brush areas (Figure 8) to a more palatable
forage cover not only increases grazing values and reduces erosion, but also
shows promise of increasing water yields. Water yields fro m chaparral
have been measured since 1956 within the Three-Bar Wildlife Area west of
Roosevelt Lake in a cooperative project involving the Arizona Game and Fish
Department, the Forest Service and the Salt River Project. The experi-
mental watershed area was burned-over by a wildfire in June of 1959 which
consumed 21,700 acres of surrounding brushlands and involved costs totalling
$598,000.

One experimental watershed was reseeded to grass after the fire and
resprouting of the brush controlled wit h annual applications of chemicals
(Figure 9). This watershed has shown a seven-fold increase in water yield
for equal quantities of precipitation.

~

Figure 8.

Typical chaparral. After the second year, however, soil movement dropped off
very rapidly. Clear water now flows continuously throughout the year, where
before the fire, a continuous flow occurred only during the winter and early
spring months,

".

- 11 -
