o
~
0'
Coon

of slllal1 group laterals as par-t of. the Reclamation and USDA

later-al improvement program in Grand Valley. The organiza-

tiOil of later'al opecators into moce for-mal entities is

necessary to strengthen coordination and implementation of

the Reclamation later-al program and the USDA onfarm program.

Las Vegas Wash Unit
The st.atus repor.t, dated Octobel' 1982 Has celeased in

De,cember 19C12. The report presented recent study findings

ana l'ecommended modifications to the sallnity control plan

for Las Vegas Wash. The major finding of the stUdy was that

the salt loading Has induced by the disposal of waste Hater

into wasteways or basins which leach salt from the underlying

saline geologic deposits. A recommended solution is to chan-

nel the waste water around the saline deposits which would

reduce the leaching ano salt loading.

The salt pickup could be reduced by 79,000 tons per year

by a 4.5-mile bypass channel which would convey, with minimal

seepage, waste watel' and minor storm runoff along the north

side of the Wash flood plain.

Reclamation has begun a verification progl'am in the

Pittman area which would monitor the ground water response to

the elimination of waste water seepage from unlined ditches.

A 3.5-mile Pittman bypass pipeline was delayed until fiscal

year 1984.

An effort is being made to cooi'dinate the pr'oposed

salinity control action with plans of Clark County agencies.

-11-

ii. >>$
