The effect!o; of ponderos.a pine overstory den~ity
on forage and animal production i... being mea:;-
ured on the Wild Bill Beef Study Aft'a. Speci-
fically. the Fore."t St~r\'i('e is finding answe~ to
the question, "If ponderosa pine is thinned to
so many stems per acre. will the quantity of
forage production and the quality of the [perl 1)(>
increased proportionally?"
Data already collected shows that prorluclion
declines with increased crown density and de-
creaS<'d sunlight. but an estimated 10 year.-; of
study will be needed before necessary informa-
tion is completed.
Study results correlated with data obtained
from Beaver Crt'ek \\'aten:.hed projeds will gin'
the Fore~t Ser..ice n hasis for writing ~tultiple
Use !\lanagement prescriptions in which all
uses can be complemented.

Chaparral Conversion Srudies

The ~lingus and White Spar "'at.el":'heds in
the Chaparral Type on tlw Pre:-;('ott :\'ational
Fore~t are l'urrently undergoing calihration for
water yield in advance of tn'atment. ~teasure-
ment of vegetation cover is now in proc..'l~S,
The Tontn Springs pilot area. located in the
lower nnd drier chaparral type. is primarily a
grazing and root-plowing study.
These watel"l:'heds should furnish valuabll' in-
formation to guide a realistic prngram in chap-
arral management.

Grassland \Varersheds

Inter.-persed with the higher ponderosa pine
and mixed conifer types on the Apache ~a-
tional Forest are sizahle areas of natural open
grassland, 11wsp an'{lS arp in the high moun-
tain prf'cipitation zone and yield substnntial
amount!' of water.
Gaging stations ha..e I)('('n installed 011 two ad-
j:lcent watersheds tn pro\"ide hydrologic infor-
mation and ('omparati\'{! c1at~1 on thl' amount
and timing of water yield.
These wah'rsheds nre under calihration and will
provide pilot te,;;ting area,.:; for SIlO\\' pack ma-
nipulation. They may abo furnish important
correlative dHta for patch dear cutting in the
mixed conifer type.
