<br />llu0326 <br /> <br />Field Studies <br /> <br />The Progr3m sponsored three summer field research projects relating to <br />thu idcntific3tiun of key areas: one involved identification of potential <br />sites for special insect species; one related to potentially endangered <br />plant species in tb6 Piceance Basin ( in cooperation with the U.S. Fish <br />and \,ildlife Service); and one identified potential riparian natural area <br />sites along the South Platte from Greeley downstream. <br /> <br />ClllJlll.~Ll t Lon and Coord in.:1tion with Land Managing AKencies in Colorado <br /> <br />Contacts and continuing working relationships have been established with <br />the Division of Wildlife, Division of Parks and Outdoor Recreation, State <br />Board of Land Commissioners, Bureau of Land Management, U.S. Forest Service, <br />and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. All of these agencies, with the <br />exception of the Land Board, were co-sponsors (some financially) of the <br />August, 1978 Workshop. The BLM and USFS have jointly committed $24,000 <br />toward the inventory phase of the Program. <br /> <br />Idenrification of high priority natural areas for protection will benefit <br />all outdoor recreation oriented agencies (local, state, and federal) in <br />Colorado. Mandates and responsibilities of these agencies relating to <br />natural area identification; park and recreation mastet planning; endangered <br />species protection programs; 13nd acquisition planning; educational and <br />scientific use of historic, biologic, geologic, and botanic interest areas; <br />environmental impact statement preparation; and A-95 review will be <br />enhanced by the availability of a comprehensive data base on the frequency, <br />occurrence and description of identified elements of the state's natural <br />diversity. <br /> <br />Annual Report <br /> <br />An annual report. documenting the progress of the Program since its inception <br />in the Fall o! 1977 throug~ November, 1978 has been written and is available. <br /> <br />IV. RI.:SOURCES <br /> <br />Employees: 1.0 Full-time FTE; ..5 FTE allotted to Program <br /> <br />Equipment <br /> <br />(Special and Major Items over 51,000): None <br /> <br />Lands Administered: The Natural Areas .Program was not created or mandated <br />to become another land management agency. In all cases, a designated natural <br />area will be m3[1~ged by a cooperating partner in federal, state, or local <br />government, or the private sector. <br /> <br />31 <br />
