Gfl: '-f'~
'-..1_;"'[, _,v

iii

PREFACE

This report presents the first basinwide water and related land resources plan prepared by the Missouri
River Basin Commission. The plan is the result of extensive contribution by and cooperation between numerous
water resources agencies in the Missouri River Basin.

The report is organized to present background information and an overview of the plan in the first two
chapters. The remainderofthe report presents more detailed information on the Missouri River Basin, directions
.for the future, and specific plan elements. Much of the report material is of a summary nature. More detailed
information concerning most aspects of the plan is available from the Missouri River Basin Commission or from
the member States and Federal agencies. The plan is to be updated regularly through the Commission's
continuous. planning system and a summary report is to be prepared biennially. .

The report has undergone official 90-day review by the head of each Federal department or agency, the
. Governor of each State, and each interstate agency from which a. member of the Commission has been
aPpointed. The report, along with review comments, is being submitted to the U.S. Water Resources Council for
transmittal to the President and by him to the Congress, and submitted to the Governors and the legislatures of
member States.
