Sherman
January 26. 1976
Page -6-

only about 7000 acres of irrigated land actually lost to

production. Very few acres of recreation land will be taken

out of use and. as mentioned above. these acres are used

primarily for privat(~hunting clubs.
3. Impact and Concern for Weldon Valiey School.

Much concern has been expressed about the Weldon

Valley School and more complete answers to these concerns

have been obtained. In brief. it is almost a certainty the

school is worth more than the bonded indebtedness. Thus,

the question is not who will pay the debt but. rather, how

the excess funds are distributed. The School District Organ i-

zation Act of 1965 (C.R.S. 1973. 22-30. et seq.) provides

several methods for a school district to dissolve and attach

portions of its lands to other districts.

I would expect

the district to use C.H.S. 1,973. 22-30-138. under which

boards of education of adjoining districts !nay agree on a

plan and submit the plan for approval of the voters of the

district being divided.

.", .

As part of such an agreement,. the District could

either seek employment for the teachers in an adjoining

district or retire those teachers who are near retirement,

perhaps even using proceeds from the sale of the school for

funding a retirement plan, if appropriate.
