III, Seli~ Canal- E Svstem

.

~ The Selig Canal conveys irrigation water from the Selig Canal Diversion
~~ on the Uncompahgre River in a northerly direction, a distance of 20.1 miles,
~~ serving lands on the east side of the Uncompahgre Valley, The Selig Canal
~ serves 9,960 acres of land, The capacity of the canal would range from 260 to
10 cfs,

A, Geology and Construction Materials

The canal flows north through and area of Mancos Shale bedrock. In the
first mile of the alignment, the canal crosses a area of river gravel overlain
by flood plain deposits, In the rest of the canal alignment, with the
exception of a few areas by Loutzenhizer Wash, the canal has been cut into
shale bedrock, The shale in this area is overlain by shallow clay and silt
soils. In the area by Loutzenhizer Wash, the canal crosses areas of deep
fine-grained alluvium, This alluvium is predominately lean clay and is up to
24,5 feet deep,

Borrow materials for compacted embankment in the Selig Canal could come
from the flood plain deposits of the Uncompahgre River, the alluvium of
Loutzenhizer Wash, and a small terrace gravel deposit near the Selig Canal.
The flood plain and alluvial soils are lean clays, and the terrace deposit is
a silty sand with cobbles and boulders.

B, Canal Lining

.

Approximately 20,1 miles of the canal would be in open, PVC membrane lined
section.

C. .Structures

Structures to be constructed along the canal would include 17
irrigation crossings, 71 parshall flume turnouts, 20 cross-drainage culverts,
8 county bridges,S farm crossings, 17 checks, 17 check drops, 3 pipe drops, 4
rectangular-inclined drops and 1 chute. Property to be relocated would
include one waterline crossing and one gasline relocation.

D. Safety Features

Fencing would be placed along both sides of the canal for the entire
length the section, The fencing would be primarily stock fencing with some
wire mesh fencing, The wire mesh fence would be used where the canal
parallels or crosses main roadways.

E, Cross-drainage Facilities

Cross-drainage culverts would be replaced in kind to protect the canal
from flood damage, They would be designed to handle the stormflows expected
from a 25-year frequency storm for the canal reaches down to 50-cfs capacity,
The reaches which have a 50-cfs capacity or less would be designed to pass the
10-year frequency storm, ~

30
