Of the 206 farms in 1997, 125 were <br />117 involved in livestock production. Principal crops grown are pasture, grass hay, alfalfa, <br />118 and a small amolUlt of wheat. In 1996, the agriculmral sector employed 5 percent of the <br />119 total workforce and payroll earnings for this sector were $768,000, reprcsenting about <br />120 1 percent of the COlUlty'S total earnings (USDA, 1997). <br />121 <br />122 Archuleta CoWlty ranks XXXX in agricultural production among Colorado colUlties, <br />123 with a cash receipt from all farm commodities of $6,921,000 (Ag Census, USDA, 1997) <br />124 Agriculture makes up less than X percent of COlUlty gross receipts and about one-half of <br />125 1 percent of total retail sales. <br />126 <br />127 <br />128 Retail Sales.-Archuleta County experienced retail sales totaling more than <br />129 $118 million in 1997. Of the total land in the COWlty, 53.7 percent is considered <br />141 agricultural, of which a large portion is on reservations.
