I. INTRODUCTION.

Iluringthe latter part of September, 1976, the San Juan National
Forest conducted a water quality study.of Williams Creek and
Williams Creek Reservoir. This study was undertaken because. of
the noticeable increase in algae and change in color of both the
stream and reservoir during the summer of 1976 (see photographs
Appendix B). The objective of this investigation is to determine
if there is a water quality problem, why it exists, and should
corrective action be initiated.

.. This report summarizes and interprets physical. and chemical data
collected thus far on Williams Creek and the Reservoir. Ten water
quality stations were established. Photographs of the stream and
reservoir appear in Appendix B. Figure I notes their location,
and Figure II contains detail of the reservoir and a vicinity map.
Chapter III contains a summary of the report and therecoromendations
based on the data, while Chapters IV and V comprise the data analysis
and actual data.

. II. DESCRIPTION OF AREA

Williams Creek is a tributary of the Piedra River and is located
on the Piedra Ranger District of the San Juan National Forest. The
drainage area is approximately 47.5 square miles.

The climate of the area is continental-mountainous. Summers are
cool with frequent showers in July and, August ~~ile winter snows
are heavy. Relative humidity is usually low, most days are sunny,
daily temperature fluctuations are high, and average temperatures
vary inversely with elevation. Average annual precipitation varies
from 25 - 45 inches with approximately 50% of that or 18 inches
running off yielding an average runoff of 45,000 acre-feet. The
vegetation, geology, and soils of the area are detailed in the Piedra
Ared Soil Survey.

Williams Creek Reservoir was constructed by. the Colorado Division of
Wildlife in 1958 solely for recreation use. It does not fluctuate
because of irrigation drawdown. It floods 350 acres and reaches a
maximum depth of 77 feet. Assuming an average depth of 25 feet would
give an estimated capacity of 8700 acre-feet. Use of the reservoir
has grown from about 23,000 visitor days in 1966 to 54,000 visitor
days in 1975 and .is expected to keep growing. This makes it a key
recreation area on the San Juan National Forest and its water quality
important to maintain.
