co
In
M
,=)
~) Other benefits have been uncovered on some sites. These additional
'.:::c benefits include less ditch spraying, improvements in cultural
operation efficiency, easier harvesting, fewer field weed problems,
and increased production acreage. It should be noted that the average
figures reported here mask the range of site specific benefit levels
real ized by GVSP improvements.

.

.

------------------------------------------------------------------

TABLE 11

Input Changes Due to Irrigation System Improvements

INPUT UNIT BEFORE AFTER CHANGE 1/
Irrigation Labor
crop hrs/ac./season 2.73 .93 1.80
orchard hrs/ac./season 22.25 2.94 19.31
Field ~la i ntenance Labor
crop hrs/ac./season .48 .11 .37
orchard hrs/ac./season 6.66 1.80 5.36
De I ivery Maintenance Labor
crop hrs/100ft/season 1.20 .18 1.02
orchard hrs/100ft/season 4.09 .24 3.85
Field Machine Time
crop hrs/ac./season .10 .02 .08
orchard hrs/ac./season .38 .00 .38
De I I ve '-y Machine Time
crop hrs/100ft/season .97 .00 .97
ol-cha,"d hrs/100ft/season .90 .00 .90
1/ rigures are averaged based on acreage weights, 1985-1989

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Table 12 displays the yield increases reported after system
improvements were installed. Generally field crop yields are impacted
less than the orchard crops. Orchard sites monitored tended to be
irrigated under very inefficient systems in the before condition. The
sizeable increases reported are due to improved water adequacy, more
timely watering, and more even water application. The typical
producer is realizing a yield improvement as a result of applying GVSP
salinity control practices.

34
