,~
'<::"
(')
C,I

.

.

, .
-'

PART 2

SOIL SALINITY MEASUREMENTS

OBJECT! VES

To monitor salinity within the soi
of deep percolation.

prof i I e as re I ated to the percent

ACCOMPLI SHMENTS

During 1989, the soi I staff made quantitative salt determinations at
depths of 6,18, and 30 inches for 37 monitoring stations. These
include the 20 monitored sites established in 1989.

OBSERVATIONS

Sal inity levels are relatively low in the sol Is at all the monitoring
sites <Table 9. Sal indy in mmhos per cm). The present sal inity
levels in the soi I at those sites have I ittle, if any effect, on crops
commonly grown in the Grand Valley <Table 10. Crop Tolerance Table).
Some deep percolation is required to keep salinity at a level below
the root zone. The amount of deep percolation to keep salinity below
the root zone is dependent on the soi I type and the landscape on which
so i J 5 occur.

Monitoring sites 11, 12, 13, 14, and 17 have been monitored for a
period of 6 years. Salinity levels have changed very little during
this 6 year.period. Salinity levels in these soils are approximately
the same in 1989 as they were in 1984. On site 17, if the data from
1984 is thrown out, this site may be showing a slight increase In
salinity level.

Monitoring sites 15, 16, and 21 have been monitored for a period of 5
years. Salinity levels on these sites have not changed appreciably
during the period 1985 through 1989.

Monitoring sites 26 and 27 have been monitored for 4 years.
been little change in salinity levels on these sites.

There has

Monitoring sites 28, 29, 30, 31, 32, 33, 35, 36 and 18 have been
monitored for a period of 3 years. Salinity levels have changed very
little during this 3 year period. On site 28, salinity levels may be
on the Increase. Th i s may be in part to the fact that the so i I
samples are being taken from an area outside of the spray pattern of
the microJets.

25
