li.'
00
C't':
-

two classes according to productive capacity. Class 1 arable lands, or
those of first quality, are highly productive and desirable in every
respect for permanent irrigation agriculture. Class 2 arable lands are
less desirable for development or more costly to prepare for irrigation
owing to an unfavorable topography, or are somewhat limited in produc-
tive capacity because of a slight deficiency in one or more of the fac-
tors considered.

c

The results of the classification are summarized as follow~:' ,

Colorado Division Land Classification

Unit: Acres
Non-irrigated I}'rigated Grand
Area :Class l:Class 2:Tota+ :Class l:Class 2: Total Total
Upper Ditches 6,590 :6,590 : 5,310 5,310 11,900
Lower Di tches : 310 2,860 :3,170 : 4,330 :10,410 :14,740 17,910
Total 310 9,450 :9,760 4,330 :15,720 :20,050 29,810
Net area 290 8,880 :9,170 4,070 :14,780 :18,850 28,020

Net acreages were obtained by deducting six percent from the gross acre-
age for rights-of-way, roads, farmsteads, and other nonproducing areas.
The tabulation does not include lands in Long Hollow and State Line
Reservoir sites.

The irrigated area in New Mexico was mapped and a reconnaissance
classification was made of the adjacent lands by the Bureau of Recla-
mation in 1933. The survey showed a net area of 4,890 acres irrigated
that year, or within the previous five years, including 270 acres irri-
gated within the State Line Reservoir site. The State Engineer of New
Mexico completed a resurvey of the area in 1938. The results showed
3,790 acres irrigated, and 520 acres of fallow land, which are indi-
cated on drawing 56-D-427. On the basis of this survey a total of 3,800
acres was recommended by the New Mexico water users as an equitable
figure for the project area. This has been accepted for Bureau of Recla-
mation studies. Construotion of State Line Reservoir would retire about
235 acres of land irrigated in 1938, but it is anticipated that this
would be replaced from fallow land.

18
