Neck banded elk <br />""ere observed in this area and also in the area of Highway 82 <br />relocation route. <br /> <br />Mount Elbert Canal route will go through at least 2 elk calving areas <br />near Box Creek and near Herrington Creek and will interfere with a <br />key deer and elk wintering area on the ridge immediately to the north <br />of Box Creek. <br /> <br />The canal route will also interfere with beaver on every drainage <br />it crosses, except Box Creek. <br /> <br />III-lOb, Para #5 - Thc area to the east and south of the proposed Twin Lakes <br />Danl and the tlrst Dlile of the Otero Canal is a key vlintering area fa!" <br />deer and elk, and is also a migration corridor for both species. <br /> <br />The area of the Otero Canal fron1 the Chaffee County road (con1es west <br />fron1 Granite) sOlIth is critical wintering area for both deer and elk. <br />We recommend that this entire stretch of canal be planned as a buried <br />conduit. <br /> <br />Deer have been observed throughout the entire length of the proposed <br />Olero Canal, v;ith elk being obse-Tved- in considerable nUmbel"S at <br />either end of the canal. <br /> <br />The ridgc immediately north of Clear Creek Reservoir is of particular <br />irnporlancc. <br /> <br />Bald eagles aJlCl osprey arc also occasional visitors to the area <br />during lnigralion period::.;,. <br /> <br />Sighting of C2.nada lynx in the Mount Elbert "-rea has been reported. <br /> <br />III-190 - last paragraph - Include the st2.tcrnent that the fish unit and grounds <br />will be controlled and ope rated by the Colorado Division of Wildlife. <br /> <br />-5- <br />
