S1JIIIllIBXY <br /> <br />Presented herein is a comprehensive report covering in deta11 <br /> <br />the resu1ts of engineering studies on methods of alleviating the <br /> <br />salinity prob1em on the Lower Co1orado River. <br /> <br />The studies .....ere conducted entirely vithin the frame.....ork set <br /> <br />forth by the Senate and House Appropriations Committees in author- <br /> <br />izing fUnds to initiate these studies. These directives were <br /> <br />,1- <br />! <br />I <br />" <br />. <br /> <br />repeated 1ater in Senate Appropriations Committee Report No. 2178, <br /> <br /> <br />87th Congress,2d Session, which provided, in part, as follo.....s: <br /> <br />"The committee directs that the studies which are to be <br />made with this money shall not encompass a so1ution <br />requiring that water de1ivered to Mexico from the United <br />States bypass the More1os Dam; require that all water <br />delivered to Mexico from the Co1orado River be charged <br />against Mexico's allotment, as set forth in Artic1e 10 <br />of the treaty; and that they include possible remedial <br />measures in all irrigated areas from which return water <br />f10ws into the Col.orado River below Hoover Dam. The <br />committee further directs that in connection vith studies <br />of proposed construction or operation on an irrigation <br />project, there be c10se coordination and consultation <br />with appropriate and responsible officials of such <br />projects . . .. II - <br /> <br />The Well ton-Mohawk Irrigation and Drainage District has proposed that <br /> <br />an additional 30,000- to 35,OOO-acre cotton allotment be lIlB.de ava:l.l- <br /> <br />able to the District. The changed cropping pattern resulting <br /> <br />~l <br /> <br />therefrom wou1d resul.t in reduced total IllUlU8l irrigation in1'lows to <br />the district of 50,000 to 60,000 acre-feet througn the reduction of <br />high water use crops and doub1e cropping. .
