>,

UC-700
2/28/73

Preliminary Summary Sheets
Bostwick Park Project

Location

Montrose and DUlli~ison Counties, west-Central Colorado, in Gunnison River
Basin of Upper Colorado River Basin.

Authorized

Authorized as a participating project with the Upper Colorado River Stor-
age Project by Public Law 88-568, September 2, 1964 (78 Stat. 852).

Current Status

Construction of Silver Jack Dam, the major feature of the project, was
initiated in 1967 and was completed 'in 1971. Water storage in the reser-
voir initiated in the fall of 1970 and the reservoir filled in the spring
of 1971. Project water was made available to maintain minimum flows for
fish in Cimarron Creek below the head of the Cimarron Canal in the summer
of 1971. and delivery of irrigation water under special contracts began in
1971 to those lands under existing ditches.

Until the conveyance systems are completed, particularly the rehabilita-
tion of the existing Vernal Mesa Ditch, a substantial portion of the
available irrigation water 'cannot be delivered to the project lands.

All of the other project features are scheduled for construction during
. the next 3 to 5 years.

Plan of Development

Unused flows of Cimarron Creek, a tributary of the Gunnison River, are
being developed for irrigation, recreation, and sport fishery enhance-
ment. Storage regulation is provided at the recently completed Silver
Jack Reservoir on Cimarron Creek. Released storage water and usable na-
tural flows will be diverted from the creek into the existing Cimarron
Canal. Some project water will be released to project lands along the
canal but most of it will be distributed by the existing Vernal Mesa and
Hairpin ditches which head at the canal terminus. A pipe section of the
Vernal Mesa ditch will be replaced and the Lytle and Bostwick laterals
will be constructed to convey water from the ditch to lands that are
above those presently irrigated. Recreational facilities will be pro-
Vided by the Forest Service at the Silver Jack Reservoir. Certain mini-
mum flows for fish will be maintained in the creek below the head of the
Cimarron Canal.

Outstanding new recreation and fishery opportunities will be created at
the Silver Jack Reservoir.
