INTRODUCTION

The Wellton-Mohawk Irrigation and Drainage District was created
by act of the Arizona State Legislature on July 23, 1951. It is a political
subdivision of the state, controlled by a nine-man Board of Directors
elected by the landowners, I t was organized so that there would be
a legal body that could enter into a contract with the United States
to repay the cost of this irrigation and power project and to operate
and maintain the project, The irrigation features were authorized by
Congress on July 23, 1947 as the Wellton-Mohawk Division of the Gila
Project, Bureau of Reclamation, and signed into law by President Tru- l
man on July 30. The District extends from the Gila Gravity Main Canal i
siphon under the Gila river, 15 miles east of Yuma, for 45 miles along 1
the Gila river to Texas Hill. It was established to embrace a maximum
of 75,000 irrigable acres or the use of 300,000 acre feet of diversion less l
return of Colorado river water, Construction started in 1949 and the
fIrst water was delivered in 1952, The power distribution facilities have
been operated by the District since 1951. The facilities were improved
and extended as a result of a loan from the Rural ElectrifIcation Ad-
ministration received in 1954,

4
