<br />INTRODUCTION <br /> <br />The Wellton-Mohawk Irrigation and Drainage District was created <br />by act of the Arizona State Legislature on July 23, 1951. It is a political <br />subdivision of the state, controlled by a nine-man Board of Directors <br />elected by the landowners, I t was organized so that there would be <br />a legal body that could enter into a contract with the United States <br />to repay the cost of this irrigation and power project and to operate <br />and maintain the project, The irrigation features were authorized by <br />Congress on July 23, 1947 as the Wellton-Mohawk Division of the Gila <br />Project, Bureau of Reclamation, and signed into law by President Tru- l <br />man on July 30. The District extends from the Gila Gravity Main Canal i <br />siphon under the Gila river, 15 miles east of Yuma, for 45 miles along 1 <br />the Gila river to Texas Hill. It was established to embrace a maximum <br />of 75,000 irrigable acres or the use of 300,000 acre feet of diversion less l <br />return of Colorado river water, Construction started in 1949 and the <br />fIrst water was delivered in 1952, The power distribution facilities have <br />been operated by the District since 1951. The facilities were improved <br />and extended as a result of a loan from the Rural ElectrifIcation Ad- <br />ministration received in 1954, <br /> <br />4 <br />
