1937

The reservoir gates are typically closed during November through March and all inflow is stored. Requests for res-

eervoir releases of stored water by downstream irrigators typically begin in the first 2 weeks of April and continue

episodically through October. Rainfall runoff that is generated upstream from the reservoir is noticeably anenuated

by storage in the reservoir. Streamflow between John Manin Reservoir and Lamar is substantially decreased by

irrigation diversions.

Specific conductance increases dramatically downstream from Pueblo (fig. 4). The downstream increase in

specific conductance is a function of discharge and the evaporative concentration of dissolved solids; specific con-

ductance \s inversely proportional to discharge. The median specific conductance increases downstream from 276

llSlcm at Caiion City to 3.855 llSlcm at Lamar (fig. 4). Miles (1977) reponed that the majority of the salt loading to

the Arkansas River occurs between Canon City and Pueblo Reservoir and is caused by the dissolution of highly

saline sedimentary materials that are found in the reach. Downstream from Pueblo to Lamar, specific conductance

increases primarily because of the consumptive use of irrigation water and the concomitant increase in the concen-

.tration of dissolved-salts. The rate of increase in specific conductance is larger downstream from Catlin Dam (fig.

. 4) because irrigation rerum flow comprises a larger percentage of discharge in this reacb than it does upstream

from Catlin Dam.

Figure 4 Dear here.

,~~...
EPO"; i
d~;o.ilt.~'R .,......
_~er, \W\\\"'ll"'t'\ l n"'\I\.~'
<;) r'l.... \.. ~ ~O l"'"G.
~ ,-~,' l'
.-. ~ ! ~ \ r'" ....~
, . ..--.......--
", .~'".'

.

17
