Lents) Director <br /> <br />G. ODOR EXPOSURE <br /> <br />An odor is anything which affects or stimulates an olfactory response (l.eo, smell). Odors are mainly a citizen welfare problem and affect <br />small areas near the source. Odorous compounds may be in all three physical forma (solIdI liquid serao! or gas). Since no method of <br />calcul~tlng emissions exists, measurements must be made during operation of the source to determine actual ambient levels. <br /> <br />The t}'pe and source of odor determine much of the impact. Many odors are pleasant to some and unpleasant to others. Each individual haa their <br />own perception of an odor. <br /> <br />Intensity also determines the impact of an odor. The "Handbook of Environmental Data on Organic Chemicals" states that cheaicals witb odor <br />indices (odor potential determined by vapor pressure) of 100.000 or greater have a high potential of causing odor problems. Also. each <br />individual has a set ability to detect odors. This varies widely across tbe public spectrum. <br /> <br />Meteorological conditions have a great affect on the odor problem. Wind moves and dilutes the odors. Temperature. pressure and relative <br />humidy also contribute to the preception of odors. <br /> <br />When odor levels are high. the use and enjoyment of property may be severely limited. <br />hydrogen sulfide and can cause health problems.
