The
GlenwQod springs are located adjacent to the Colo-
rado River in Garfield County while the Dotsero
springs are located adjacent to the Colorado River
in Eagle County near the Eagle County-Garfield
County line. The pipeline in the recomrn.::nded plan
would begin at the Dotsero springs and, paralleling
the Colorado River. would traverse the remllinder of
....estern Colorado, terminat ing at the proposed con-
tour ponds near the Colorildo-Utah border in Mesa
Count y.

PURPOSE.

The purpose of the study is to determine a f~a~ible
alternative to reduce or eliminate the salt contri-
but ion to the Colorado River from an area of in-
tense mineral spring flows. GlenW'O<Jd-Dotsero
springs constitute the second largest point source
of salinity to the Colorado River. The combined
discharges annually contribute approximat~ly 25,000
acre-feet of water containing about 500,000 tons of
slllt:. About half the salt contribution COOles from
20 identified springs. Captur~ of subsurface brine
could provide I1dditional salinity reduction. From
the alternatives studied. a recommended plan was
chosen and will be presented in a f~asibility
report.

STATUS

.

Feasibility studies of th(' Glenwood-Dotsero Springs
Unit are being conducted under the Federal Water

Pollution Control Act of October 18, 1972 (Public
Law 92-500), the Colorado River Basin Salinity Con-
trol Act of June 24, 1974 (Public Law 93-320), and
Public Law 96-375 of October 3, 1980.

The feasibility investigations of these springs
have included the collection and chemical an::tlysis
of spring flow samples and the measurement of the
flows of 20 known springs that ar.:! considered amen-
able to collection for desalination. Topographical
maps of the Dotsero area were made during }larch and
April 1';173, and an electrical resistivity survey,
conducted by Applied Geophysics of Salt Lake City,
Utah, was canpleted on May I, 1973. This survey
was to help identify aquifers and geolot;ical con-
ditions governing the subsurface floW' of the saline
water. A weather station to gather evapor.'3tion
data was installed in 1977.

A notice of initiation of investigations was issued
in Janu8ry 1980. The Bureau of Reclamation is be-
ing aided in the study by a multidisciplinary plan-
ning team, a professional services contractor, and
the general public.

A contract for the technical work during Phase I of
the i nves t igat ions was awa rded to URS Corpo rat i on
of Denver. Phase I work concluded ....ith select ion
of the recommended plan in January 1982. Phase II
technical work will be contracted out, and will in-
clude completion of the feasihility level designs
and estimatf!s. and data collection for the environ-
mental statement.

Reclamation is conduct ing those portions of the
study concerning public involvement and technical
revie.....

I
,
I-'--------~
i

,
I ,________J
I---------.J

o
o
'"
:z: 0:
'" 0
...
