These wells were plugged by private
interests in October 1969. Saline surface seepage
soon app<:':1red on the south flank of the dome. Data
collect ion ind ieared that the sal ine seepage was
being transmitted into the White River and subse-
quently into the Colorado River.

PURPOSE:

Planning investigations have been conducted through
a professional services contract administered by
the Bureau of Reclamation. The contract to iden-
tify the methods to recluee saline flows was awarded
in Hay 1979 to CH2M Hill, Inc.. a Denver based
water resources consultant.

The purposes of the Meeker Dome Unit investigation
are to gain a better understanding of the quantity,
sources, and mechanisms by .....hieh saline waters
ent:r the White River, and then to identify alter-
nat~ve9 that would reduce Or eliT1'in-'lte the salt
contribution to the river. Project investigations
are being conducted in accordance with Principles
Bnd Standards for Planning Water and Related Land
Resources developed by the Water Resources Coun-
cil.

STATIlS

A multidisciplinary team was organized to involve
interested local, State, and Federal agencies as
well as speciRl interest groups and private citzens
in the planning investigations.

Feasibility studies of the Mecker Damp. Unit are be-
ing conducted under the Federal Water Pollution
Control Act of October IB, 1972 (Public Law
92-500), the Colorado River Basin Salinity Control
Act of June 24, 1974 (Publ ic Law 93-320) and Pub-
lic Law 96-375 of October 3, 19BO. '

Investigations to-date indicate that of the eight
wells drilled On the dome itself, four ~re ade-
quately plugged. The other four. the Scott. James,
and Meeker Wells; and particularly the ~arland
Well, were believed to be unplugged or inadequately
plugged and acting as conduits, allowing saline
water from subsurface geological formations to pol-
lute surface aquifers and the White River.

The Meeker Well, originally drilled for oi 1 explo-
ration purposes and abandoned in the 1920' s, has
been identified as a. significant point source of
salinity in the Colorado River system. It was
flowing at a rate o[ about 3 cubic feet per second
8?d its hig,h~y sali~e water (19,200 milligrams pe;
IHee) W,'1S lncreaslng the Colorado River's salt
load by about 57,000 tons per year, In 196B, the
well was plugged.

.

A verification program was initiated to confinn
this hypothesis. The program called for installa-
tion of a monitoring neto;.,'ork. th~ c1~aning, test-
ing, Bnd plugging of rhe MBrland. Scott, ar.d J2:!Iles
Wells. The verification program did not include
any wo\"k on the Meeker W~lL.

A:te~ installation of lhe monitoring network, con-
Sisting of observation wells and seep m~asurement

No

MEEKER
.UO~E

.'"

K'HlTE
