Nichols. The recent study by <br />the U5GSlndicates that ground-water availability in a l6-valley <br />area of eastern Nevada may be considerably greater than <br />previously thought. The study used updated methods, <br />technologies, and data to revise the results of earlier <br />investigations that were based on approaches dating from <br />more than 60 years ago. As part of this study, total annual <br />ground.water recharge to these valleys from precipitation was <br />estimated tu be about 855,000 acre.feet. and total annual <br />!:l.UUllu......dh:r i::VdpUldliur! TIle campaign <br />was requested by U,S. Representative Jim Gibbons, Senator <br />11arry Reid, and Senator John Ensign and \I.'as unveiled at a <br />to\..;n meeting in Fallon on June 6, 2001. The USGS plans to <br />sample about 100 "'-ells, including all public supply "'ells, <br />over a period of approximately 6-8 weeks. Samples will be <br />analyzed for a variety of both artlfidal and naturally occurring <br />compounds.
