0:1515

.

probable impact on many aspects of water chemistry, there are some

general reactions that can be expected. The reservoir will act

to equalize or smooth out variations in the chemical and/or physical

content of incoming flows. Turbid flows will be detained and clarified

through settling, resulting in a higher quality-use resource. Impound-
ments often act to concentrate nutrients, including residues although,

detention duration and storage volumes significantly influence this

aspect of water quality. Generally, it is anticipated that discharged
water will be slightly higher in nutrient or residue content. Water
quality data (Appendix C) give Some indication that the numbers of
coliform bacteria in the Purgatoire River above Trinidad are higher
than allowable standards for body contact sports. Impoundments often

act as bacteriological filters, concentrating bacteria of potential

public health danger in a localized area until numbers are naturally
reduced, rendering water discharged from the depths of the lake
virtually free of potentially harmful organisms. While numbers of
coliforms should be lessened in the lake through natural limiting
factors, the source(s) of these contaminants should be controlled
to avoid any potential health hazards. Specific source points are
not known, although animal waste (difficult to control) and the
presence of small, scattered areas of human habitation and visitation
along the river suggest potential sources.
Water released from the reservoir should receive increased
aeration both from the outlet works and in the reach below the dam
and will be of suitable quality for a diversity of uses. A substantial

.

IV-17
