.

8. Mineral Production. The lake will overlie some coal

deposits and might prevent feasible access to deposits immediately

adjacent to the -roject.
some of the af~dted beds

An examination of the area indicated that

have possible commercial value even though

none has been utilized for several years. The project would not re-

su1t in the loss of coal as a natural resource since the deposits would

not be damaged and would be available for future use.

9. Land Use. Project construction will commit approxi-

mately 3,392 acres of land, previously used for urban and agricultural

purposes, for the protection and enhancement of downstream properties,

increased agricult"ll productivity, and recreation and fish and wild-

life purposes. Downstream land-use practices are expected to remain

basically the same.

No significant loss of crop production will result from project

construction. The net return from nonirrip, ated land in the reservoir

area is so low that the production loss, not compensated by the pur-

chase price of the land, would be negligible. The construction of

the project would cause a loss in taxes from lands in the reservoir

area but this loss coullf~~ compensated to a large degree by increased

taxea from lands in the general project area.

Although somewhat speculative, through the establishment of

speculative recreational subdivisions, secondary impacts of project

construction could precipitate a change in land-use in surrounding

or nearby areas. This possibility is not a rare occurrence. There

are already three active subdivisions and one planned subdivision

411Jthwest of the project arejt, This is not to imply that all

IV-12
