were made in excess of crop requirements. When the Trinidad Project

becomes operational, the control gates will be removed.

8. Land Use. Much, if not all, of the land resources in,

and adjacent to, the project area were (are) in private ownership.

Within project boundaries, small parcels of irrigated acreage (about

305) along the more irrigable parts of the flood plain were farmed

to varying degrees. Approximately 155 acres were occupied by city,

residential, and commercial properties and the rest were (are) pasture

and rangeland (grass and pinon-juniper woodland). The coniferous wood-

land of pinon and juniper (pinon is dominant) and the small groves of

riparian cottonwoods that characterize the project area bear little

commercial value but are valuable to wildlife as ~ood, cover, and nest-

ing sites and for stabilization of soils. The pinon pine grows as a

small, many-branched, generally irregularly-formed tree, which, at

intervals of several years, produces nuts highly sought after by both

wildlife and humans. Its wood is rich in resin and is excellent for

use as firewood, as it burns well with a pleasant aromatic odor. Posts

can be cut from the trees. Wood of the cottonwood is less desirable,

but is used for many of the same purposes as pinon.

Fishing opportunities are nil, since habitat limitations preclude

fisheries development and all waters in this general area, with the

exception of Monument and North Lakes and the upper stream section of

the North Fork of the Purgatoire River, are privately owned. All of

these public areas are located far above the project area. Hunting

opportunities in the project area are small (predominantly small game),

being limited as a result of urban development.

Suitable area. for

11-32

.

I
1

.

;~
