0:1488

.

.

elevations along this part of the divide are 13,000 feet at the
western end, 8,000 feet in the vicinity of the headwaters of
Lorencito and Long Canyons, and 9,500 feet on Raton Mesa in the
headwaters of Raton Canyon, southwest of Trinidad. East of Trinidad
and north of the river is a rolling-plains srea.
b. HydroloRV. In downstream order, the major left

bank tributaries upstream from the damsite are Wet, Zarcillo, Burro,

and Reilly Canyons. The largest right bank tributaries are South
Fork, Lorencito, and Long Canyons. The mouths of Reilly and Long
Canyon will be within the conservation pool. Long Canyon, with a
drainage area of 109 square miles, is the largest tributsry above

the d~ site. The second largest tributary above the dam is the

South lork, which drains 101 ruggedly mountainous squsre mUes in
the southwestern portion of the upper basin.
The conformation of the upper Purgatoire River basin has develop-

ed a stream pattern in which the tributary drainage areas are

cOlllp4ratively small and the tributaries are relatively short.

From the confluence of the North and Middle Forks, the Purgatoire

River flows through a valley in a narrow mountainous section to

Trinidad. This valley varies in width from a few hundred feet to

about 1/4 mile. Between Trinidad and the mouth of San Francisco

Creek, the stream flows through an alluvial vslley which reaches

a maximum width of about 3/4 mile. In the hesdwater reaches up-

stream from Weston, gradients are several hundred feet per mile.

Below that point to the vicinity of Long Canyon, slopes are in
excess of 50 feet per mile.
