b. Pinon Canyon Dam. Pinon Canyon Dam is a small

detention darn located about 0.6 mile north of Trinidad on Pinon Arroyo,
an ephemeral tributary of the Purgatoire River. The darn provides local
flash flood protection for a highly developed area in the northwestern
and central section of the city.
c. Emergency Flood Control. The Corps has constructed
two emergency flood control projects (channel protective works) on the
Purgatoire River in Trinidad to protect the urban areas. This work
was accomplished in 1950 and 1956 at costs of $3,880 and $43,034,
respectively.

.

3. Soil Conservation Service.

a. The Fishers Peak - Carbon Arroyos Watershed Plan:

This plan consists of a combination of land treatment and structural

measures that contribute directly to soil and water conservation, water-

shed protection, and reduction of floodwater, sediment, and erosion

damages.

4. Others, Except for the offstream Monument and North
Lakes, there are no reservoirs of consequence on the Purgatoire River or
its tributaries upstream from the project area. These small lakes are
located in the Stonewall area and have capacities of 2,200 and 1,000
acre-feet, respectively. In addition to recreational use, stored water

. from these lakes is conveyed by pipeline for municipal use by the city

of Trinidad and several small communities between the lakes and Trinidad.

1-14

.
